Community Empowerment
Building the capacity of residents and local institutions so communities can address their own challenges.
Since 2015 we have worked alongside coastal and island communities, studied policy issues, protected the environment, and published books and scientific journals from Ternate for Eastern Indonesia.

Bajo Institut Maluku Utara (BIMU) was founded in Ternate in 2015 as a community organisation dedicated to developing human resources and addressing the social, economic and cultural challenges faced by local communities.
In November 2025 our mandate was formally expanded to include research, community service, and the publication of journals and books. Today BIMU works as a research and policy organisation based in North Maluku.
Our work follows our official mandate: environment, economy and community empowerment, strengthened by research and publishing.

Community-based conservation of Macaca nigra on Kasiruta Island, South Halmahera
The Yaki (Macaca nigra), a Critically Endangered primate on the IUCN Red List, has been recorded surviving on Kasiruta Island, far from its natural range in North Sulawesi. The island has no formal protected status. We have proposed a 24-month programme with local communities to safeguard this population.
Status: proposal submitted in September 2026. Photo is an illustrative North Maluku coastal landscape.
